BMW Zagato Roadster lurks on the Concept Lawn of Pebble Beach
Never underestimate what at an automaker can accomplish with a little determination. We spotted the BMW Zagato Roadster sulking on the lawn at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance among the various other concept cars on display in front of the lodge. Built in just six weeks, BMW executed the roadster as an encore to the delectable Zagato Coupe, and the two share plenty of hand-hammered aluminum body panels. There are a few notable differences, however. The roadster boasts a completely unique hindquarters befitting a soft top. We aren't entirely smitten with the blacked-out tail lamp treatment, though the angular exhaust, flowing haunches and sculpted rear deck are straight winners in our book.
A quick stroll around the convertible revealed a number of clever details, including the Z-mesh grille, beautiful two-tone interior and leather-clad roll hoops. Do love. You can take a closer look yourself by jumping into the full gallery above.
Translogic learns how BMW kept the London Olympics rolling
BMW was one of the biggest corporate supporters of the 2012 London Olympics, earning the right to be its official car sponsor. But it wasn't just ponying up a few dozen 7 Series for the IOC that got it this plum gig. BMW made a commitment to meet specific CO2 emissions targets for the vehicles it provided.
BMW supplied about 4,000 vehicles to the London Olympics organizers, everything from motorcycles to electric Minis to hybrid 5-Series sedans to diesel X5 SUV's. Our sister site Translogic went to the Olympics to get a taste of the breadth and depth of the BMW Olympic fleet.

BMW announces pricing for updated 2013 7 Series
The latest new bit of news surrounding the 2013 BMW 7 Series
is a price tag: $74,195 gets you inside the large doors of the 740i,
and that includes $895 destination (as do all prices that follow). The
740Li xDrive is a new addition slotted at the top of the 740 range and
will run $81,195. Next up on the entry-price ladder is the ActiveHybrid 7 with a smaller but more more potent powertrain, 2.5 miles of EV range and better fuel economy, ringing up $84,895 at the till.
There's a $6,700 spread in prices for the model with the 445-horsepower, 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, with the 750i starting things off at $87,195 and the 750Li xDrive running $93,895. It's quite a leap from there to the next plateau: the short-wheelbase Alpina B7 clocks in at $128,495, the long-wheelbase B7 requires $132,395. Adding xDrive to either of those models adds $3,000. But it's the in-house 760Li that tops the charts at $140,200.
The 2013 models have been breathed on everywhere, with design, powertrain, technology and efficiency tweaks providing comprehensive improvement. Have a look below for the full price list.

Forbes: The World's Most Reputable Companies
One company that has been able to do this exceptionally well: BMW. The German automaker is now in the top 10 for all seven dimensions on a global level, and in the top 10 in 10 of the 15 markets, earning the title of world’s most reputable company for 2012.
It earned a global RepTrak score of 80.08 out of a possible 100, and in its home country BMW did even better (85.79), which isn’t uncommon. Nielsen says companies tend to have a stronger reputation at home. On average, the home country reputation is 4 points higher than the global reputation across all 15 markets.
“BMW has earned the trust and respect of consumers all around the world though its consistent focus on delivering high quality in all of its actions,” says Nielsen. “For a company to earn a reputation above 80 on a global level is remarkable because we know how difficult it is to build a strong emotional connection outside of your home country.”
Because reputation is often tied to the history of the company, the level of trust and admiration you need to break a score of 80 relies on many years of positive action and relevant communication, Nielsen says.
The weaker spots for BMW include the U.S., Japan, Canada, and China where it scored in the 70s—however, a score between 70 and 79 still indicates a strong reputation and “considering that these are the home markets of the largest competitors, this speak to the strength of BMW,” he says.
In total, three automakers landed in the top 10 this year; Daimler and Volkswagen hold the No. 4 and No. 8 spots, respectively. Both German car companies outperformed the auto industry by more than 10 points. “This tells us that even if you are in a troubled industry, you can still deliver on your promises through a focus on quality,” Nielsen explains.

BMW named most valuable car brand
In the latest release of its BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands study, market researchers Milward Brown have given BMW the highest ranking of any carmaker, according to Automotive News. Toyota – last year's winner – finished second, followed by Mercedes-Benz, Honda and Nissan, according to the report.
BMW had last finished atop the rankings in 2010, according to the report, with Toyota taking the crown from 2006-2009. The highest-ranked American brand was Ford at seventh, trailing sixth-place Volkswagen. The top ten was filled out by Audi, Hyundai and Lexus. Toyota's drop was attributed to its production interruptions due to the natural disasters that affected all of the Japanese automakers last year, according to AN.
BMW's win among auto manufacturers was only enough to place it 23rd in the overall brand ranking, with an estimated brand value of $24.6 billion. Apple, the overall winner, according to the report, had a $182.9 billion valuation, ahead of IBM ($116 billion) and Google ($107.9 billion). Toyota's valuation was $21.8 billion, with Mercedes-Benz and Honda far behind at $16.1 billion and $12.7 billion respectively. No other carmaker had a valuation over $10 billion.

BMW names Karim Habib new design chief
With BMW putting its Chris Bangle days behind it, one name that has emerged as a dominant force in the design of German luxury sedans has been Karim Habib.
The Canadian-Lebanese designer and engineer rose up through the ranks
of the BMW Group design offices, styling among other vehicles, the
current 7 Series. A few years ago, Habib defected to arch-rival Mercedes-Benz, but was lured back to Munich to head up the brand's exterior design department.
Now BMW has promoted Habib to design director, putting him in charge of all aspects of vehicle design – both inside and out – for the BMW brand specifically (discounting Mini and Rolls-Royce). In his new capacity, Habib will report to Adrian van Hooydonk, who continues to oversee all design for the entire BMW Group as senior vice-president. Find the official announcement below.

Vehicle Profile: 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5
Green means go.
Add the liquid-cooled electric motor and the total drive system output reaches 335-hp and 330 lb/ft of torque.
The world’s benchmark sport sedan breaks new ground with the
introduction of the 2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5—a model that manages to
boost power and performance over its 535i Sedan stablemate, while
shifting into the green band of efficiency. For all of its eco-friendly
credentials, the ActiveHybrid 5 stays true to its BMW heritage,
surpassing the competition in driver engagement, build quality, and
interior refinement.
Like other hybrid models in the BMW family, the new 2012
ActiveHybrid 5 (MSRP $60,950) pairs a combustion engine with an electric
motor to deliver superior fuel mileage with all the driving pleasure
buyers expect. The ActiveHybrid 5, however, is the first BMW hybrid
model that can be driven solely on electric power, offering around-town
motoring with zero emissions.
The heart of the ActiveHybrid 5 is the same TwinPower turbo
3.0-liter inline six-cylinder that motivates the 535i. Boasting a
TwinScroll turbo, piezo direct fuel injection and Valvetronic variable
intake valve lift control, the 3.0-liter inline-six cranks out 300 hp
and 300 lb/ft of peak torque.
Also carried over from the 535i is the standard eight-speed
STEPTRONIC automatic transmission paddleshifters mounted on the steering
wheel are optional). Acceleration runs from 0-60 in just 5.7 seconds
while overall driving range increases (and carbon dioxide emissions
decrease) by up to 16 percent compared to the 535i. BMW has not
announced final fuel-economy ratings for the ActiveHybrid 5, but,
following an initial review, the editors of Car and Driver magazine estimate the vehicle achieving up to 34 mpg on the highway.
Storing power for the electric motor is a 96-cell lithium-ion
battery with a usable energy capacity of 675 watt-hours. Encased in a
collision-resistant housing set between the rear wheel arches, the
battery is so compact that the ActiveHybrid 5 can still offer 13.2 cubic
feet of storage space in the trunk. To further boost fuel efficiency,
the lithium-ion battery also powers the air conditioning, leaving the
passenger compartment cool and comfortable even when the Hybrid Auto
Start-Stop function switches off the inline-six-cylinder engine and runs
the car on electric power alone—at stoplights, for example, or when
coasting downhill.
The ActiveHybrid 5 can also run on emissions-free, all-electric
mode for distances up to 2.5 miles at speeds of up to 37 mph, which is
perfect for parking spot trawling or negotiating drive-time traffic. And
if you’d like to sustain maximum efficiency even when the road clears,
set the Driving Dynamics Control system to “ECO PRO” Mode. ECO PRO shuts
off the combustion engine and decouples it from the drive shaft when
the car is traveling on the highway at speeds up to 100 mph. Dip into
the throttle and the TwinPower turbo six instantly reengages for
seamless passing power.
Along with the aforementioned Auto Start-Stop function, the BMW
EfficientDynamics system includes Brake Energy Regeneration, which
charges the lithium-ion battery with up to 15,000 watts when the brakes
are applied.
According to the review in Car and Driver, “One of the
most interesting aspects of the ActiveHybrid 5 is the level to which its
powertrain management system makes decisions based on information from
outside the car.” Program a route using the standard navigation system,
and BMW’s power electronics analyze the driving conditions of that
route—including topography and speed limits—and prime all powertrain
systems for more efficient energy management throughout your trip.
Here’s an example of how this “Intelligent Energy Management”
system works: If your route includes a series of hills, the system
allows the battery to provide maximum energy to the electric motor for
supplemental-power delivery on the way up. Depleting the battery on the
ascent isn’t a concern, since the system knows it will recharge on the
way down.
The first full hybrid model in the history of BMW deserves to stand
out. To that end, the ActiveHybrid 5 receives a host of exclusive
design cues including “ActiveHybrid 5” lettering on the C-pillars and
doorsills, an aluminum plate on the center console bearing the same ID
and custom covers for the engine and the lithium-ion battery.
Model-exclusive options include Bluewater metallic exterior paint and
18-inch streamline light-alloy wheels designed for superior aerodynamic
efficiency.
Following their “First Drive” evaluation of the ActiveHybrid 5, the editors at Motor Trend
magazine declared, “Its driving experience [is] absolutely worthy of
the marque's performance heritage.” When you’re ready to experience the
Ultimate Driving Machine® of premium hybrid sedans, contact us to test drive the new BMW ActiveHybrid 5.
Vehicle Profile: The 2012 BMW Z4
Sculpture at speed.
As
noted, the big news for 2012 is the introduction of the new Z4
sDrive28i, the foundation of the Z4 family. In the Z4 sDrive28i, the
normally aspirated inline six-cylinder found in last year’s Z4 sDrive30i
is replaced by a new inline-four, displacing 2.0 liters and featuring
direct injection, Valvetronic turbo variable intake control and a
TwinScroll turbo.
Tracing its design heritage back to the storied BMW Z8 (itself an
evocation of the milestone BMW 507 of the 1950s), the new 2012 BMW Z4
two-seat Roadster fulfills the mandate of every premium roadster: To
surround you in absolute comfort while delivering the ride of your life.
This year, the Z4 lineup matches precise handling, robust power and
supreme luxury with exceptional efficiency, thanks to the addition of an
all-new TwinPower turbo inline four-cylinder base.
BMW offers the Z4 in three trim levels: the Z4 sDrive28i (MSRP
$48,650), Z4 sDrive35i (MSRP $55,150), and Z4 sDrive35is (MSRP $64,200).
In the Z4 model names, “s” stands for “sport,” and “i" indicates a
fuel-injected engine.
The new TwinPower turbo four cranks out 240 hp and 260 lb/ft of
torque—40 lb/ft more than last year’s six-cylinder. Best of all, that
abundance of torque reaches its peak at a low 1,250 rpm, good for
near-instantaneous acceleration. Power channels through either a
six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic
transmission. Sprints from 0-60 mph take 5.5 seconds (with the manual
transmission), and fuel economy, EPA-estimated at up to 34 mpg highway,
is improved by up to 20 percent over the Z4 sDrive30i.
The source of power for the Z4 sDrive35i continues to be the
renowned 3.0-liter TwinPower turbo inline six-cylinder, making 300 hp
and 300 lb/ft of torque in this application. The dynamic Z4 sDrive35is
model draws strength from a 335-hp version of the same powerplant. Drop
the hammer on the Z4 sDrive35is and an electronically controlled
overboost function temporarily raises torque from its usual 332 lb/ft
peak to 369 lb/ft. The result: Bolting from a standstill to 60 mph in
less than five seconds.
A six-speed manual transmission serves as the standard gearbox on
the Z4 sDrive35i while an advanced seven-speed, Double-Clutch automatic
transmission (optional on the Z4 sDrive35i) sourced from the BMW M3
heightens performance in the Z4 sDrive35is. Shifts with the seven-speed
automatic are breathtakingly swift, while manual control is available
through the gear selector lever on the center console, or via paddles
mounted on the steering wheel.
Straight-line propulsion may capture headlines, but a true Roadster
earns its stripes slicing through twisting tarmac. A fully independent
suspension, four-wheel anti-lock ventilated disc brakes, and
speed-sensitive Electric Power Steering help make the Z4 the perfect
implement for precise road carving—as do such standard aids such as
traction control, Cornering Brake Control, Driving Dynamics Control, and
Dynamic Stability Control.
For drivers looking to explore the razor’s edge of premium Roadster
performance, the Z4 offers the M Sport Package on the Z4 sDrive28i and
the Z4 sDrive35i. It’s a gathering of features designed to push the
level of driving excitement squarely into the red (most of these
features come standard on the sDrive35is). The package includes an
Aerodynamic Kit, sport seats, special interior trim, an anthracite
headliner, and 18-inch light-alloy wheels (19-inch light-alloys are also
available on the Z4 sDrive35i and Z4 sDrive35is). An M Sport
leather-trimmed steering wheel is also added, along with an Adaptive M
Suspension with electronically controlled dampers and an increased
top-speed limiter (up to 155 mph).
At the touch of a button, the Z4 hardtop roof completely retracts
in 20 seconds, unveiling the bounty of standard features you’ll find
inside. The Z4 sDrive28i brims with such must-haves as Xenon Adaptive
Headlights and rain-sensing windshield wipers, Bluetooth® phone connectivity, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system, HD Radio, an auxiliary jack, and an iPod®/USB adapter.
Choosing the Z4 sDrive35i nets you additional standards such as
eight-way power seats, Kansas Leather seating and Brushed Aluminum
interior trim, while the top-of-the-line Z4 sDrive35is boasts 10-way
power seats with adjustable side bolsters and the Aluminum Carbon Shadow
trim.
Buyers intending to personalize their Z4 models have a host of
available packages and stand-alone options to select from. Depending on
the model, the choices include a surround sound audio system, heated
front seats and steering wheel, satellite radio, BMW Assist™, and a
satellite-based navigation system with a pop-up 8.8-inch high-resolution
display.
Come experience the exhilaration of driving in its most liberating
form by scheduling a test drive of the new 2012 BMW Z4 Roadster.

BMW – The Early Years
BMW, from the very beginning.
As a manufacturer of world-class automobiles, the story of BMW goes back nearly 100 years and tracks the history of the 20th century and some of its most important achievements on wheels.
The story of BMW begins in 1913 with Bavarian-born Karl Friedrich Rapp, whose company, Rapp Motoren Werke, secured a contract with Austro-Daimler to manufacture the company’s V12 airplane engines. In 1916, Rapp resigned from the company and merged his company with Gustav Flugmaschinefabrik to form Bayersiche Flugzeungwerke—soon to be renamed Bayersiche Motoren Werke, or “Bavarian Motor Works,” the BMW we know today.
In 1917, BMW produced its first airplane engine, the six-cylinder Type IIIa. Two years later, using a BMW Type IV engine, Franz-Zeno Diemer set an altitude record of 32,013 feet.
In 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed, officially ending World War I and, in effect, putting BMW out of the airplane engine business. In 1922, however, after building air brakes for railway cars for three years, BMW returned to making airplane engines, which were used to set 29 aviation world records.
The BMW logo shows the color squares of the Bavarian flag on roundel with the BMW letters on top.
In 1923, BMW produced its first motorcycle, the R 32 with a flat-twin engine transversely mounted in a double tubular frame. With its two-cylinder, 494cc engine, the R 32 produced 8.5 hp with a top speed of 59 mph.
Five years later, in 1928, history was made when BMW produced its first automobile. The Dixi 3/15 PS was manufactured under license from Austin. It was made with a 743cc four-cylinder engine and, with 15 hp, had a top speed of 50 mph.
The next year, BMW introduced an improved version of the Dixi. The DA2 had an all-steel body and four-wheel brakes, and in 1930, it gave BMW its first win in an auto race. In all, BMW would produce 18,976 model DA2s.
In 1932, BMW would begin building the AM4, its first “real” car. The AM4 had a 782cc four-cylinder engine. With its suspended valves and a double chain to drive the camshafts, the AM4 could make 20 hp at 3,500 rpm and had a top speed of approximately 50 mph.
Pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering, BMW next introduced the famous 303 Saloon with an inline six-cylinder engine and BMW’s first of the now-iconic twin kidney-shaped radiator grilles. With the 303 Saloon, BMW introduced its benchmark independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering.
In 1936, BMW introduced its model 328, the most famous pre-war sports car. The 328 proved itself on racetracks throughout Europe and became a popular road car. Its light weight—only 1,830 pounds—was possible because of BMW’s innovative tubular spaceframe and alloy parts used in the car’s hood, doors and rear end. Its innovate 1971cc inline six-cylinder engine featured a hemi combustion design, producing a then-robust 80 hp, giving the 328 a top speed of 93 mph.
Meanwhile, BMW continued to manufacture world-class motorcycles. In 1935, Ernst Henne set a new world speed record of 173.7 mph riding a 500cc, 108-hp BMW motorcycle, a record that would stand for nearly 20 years.
World War II left BMW’s factories in ruins. When the war ended, the Allies imposed a ban on production – a response to BMW manufacturing airplane engines and rockets during the war.
When the ban was lifted in 1951, the first model BMW introduced was the 6 cylinder 501 luxury sedan, a poor choice for a country whose people and economy were left devastated by the war.
In 1955, BMW returned to form with production of the popular Isetta 250, built under license to Italian carmaker Iso. The Isetta 250 and its offshoot models represented BMW’s successful foray into the mini-car fad of the 1950s with its 245cc engine that produced 12 hp at 5,800 rpm and a top speed of 53 mph. Small, yes, but a mighty strong seller with a total of 161,728 built.
The BMW 507 was launched in 1956, featuring a light-alloy two-door body with a soft retractable roof. Its timeless design continues to influence BMW engineers, as evidenced by the shape of the recently produced Z8 Roadster, which clearly looks back at the 507. The 507’s large, all aluminum 3,168cc V8 engine was capable of delivering 150 hp with a top speed of 124 mph. Only 252 were ever produced, making the 507 a symbol of BMW’s long climb back after the war and a precursor of the many great automobiles BMW would go on to build.
Get into a car that’s sure to be a classic. Contact us today to see the full BMW line of world-class automobiles.
